HOUSING RENTAL ASSISTANCE NOW AVAILABLE;
NO WAITING LIST FOR HUD PROGRAM

    ST. JAMES—Persons needing assistance in paying their rent are encouraged to  contact the Phelps County Public Housing Agency to see if they qualify for rental subsides under the HUD Section 8 program. The Phelps County PHA provides subsidized housing assistance to very low income residents in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps and Washington counties, including all cities except Rolla. Currently, the PHA has 60 program openings and no waiting list.

    "Right now, we have the capacity to help about 60 families with their monthly rent and utilities," said Linda Hollandsworth, housing manager. "These families must meet income guidelines and live within the area we serve."

    The housing assistance application is now available to print on-line at MRPC's website www.meramecregion.org/phelpscopha

    Families must apply in person at the PHA office. Applications are taken  on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its office at 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. Persons in Washington County can meet with housing staff and complete applications from 9 a.m. to Noon on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Washington County Library, 235 E. High St. in Potosi.

The Phelps County PHA is governed by a seven-member board made up of the presiding commissioners in the six counties involved. The PHA contracts with the Meramec Regional Planning Commission to operate the program. During the last fiscal year, over 735 families in the Meramec Region received monthly rental assistance, which totaled over $2.2 million.

    PHA chairman is CrawfordCounty Presiding Commissioner Ed Worley; vice chairman is Dent County Presiding Commissioner Jim Biggs and secretary-treasurer is Gasconade County Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost.
