Clean Up of Illegal Dump on Wild Cat Road Under Way

BLAND—Gasconade County commissioners, road crew workers, volunteers and staff from Meramec Regional Planning Commission joined forces on April 17 to begin the clean up of an illegal dump along Wild Cat Road near Bland. The county provided heavy equipment—dump trucks, a back hoe with front-end loader, a grader and a skid loader—along with operators while MRPC provided trash bags, snacks and other items. The goal for the April 17 clean up was to remove all the bigger items. After three hours of work, the group had loaded two truckloads of metal and 21 tires and bagged 14 large bags of trash. Volunteers and community service workers will continue bagging trash until the site is clean.

“We’re getting a lot more people involved in the clean up of our county, and they are getting involved,” Associate Commissioner Matthew Penning told the board of the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste District, which met April 28. “They are cleaning up and feeling good about it,” he added. He thanked MRPC for its assistance. MRPC is using a grant from the Ozark Rivers District to assist with illegal dump clean ups around the district.

Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore thanked the county road crew for their hard work on the clean up.

Assisting with the clean up were Ron Jost, Jerry Lairmore and Matthew Penning of the Gasconade County Commission, Wayne Kottwitz, Roger Dahl, Paul Dahl and Herb Fitzgerald for the county road department, Nongluk “Lucky” Tunyavanich of MRPC and Jessie Myers, community service volunteer.

Volunteers wishing to help bag trash on the Wild Cat Road clean up are encouraged to contact Lairmore at the Gasconade County Commission at 573-486-5427 or Lucky at MRPC, 573-265-2993. Volunteers can work on their own schedules, and trash bags and gloves will be provided to all volunteers.

County road crews use a skid loader with a claw to load large items, dumped illegally along Wild Cat Road near Bland. Larger items were removed April 17, and volunteers and community service workers will continue to bag smaller items.
