MRPC, MML to Host Elected Officials Workshop June 23

ST. JAMES—Local elected officials will get a chance to learn more about their statutory duties at an upcoming Elected Officials Workshop, sponsored by the Meramec Regional Planning Commission and presented by the Missouri Municipal League.

The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, at the MRPC office, 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. Registration and dinner begin at 5 p.m., and the workshop is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is a $10 registration fee for the workshop to cover cost of dinner and materials.

Missouri Municipal League officials will lead the workshop. Topics of discussion will include the state’s Open Meetings/Open Records Law, also called the “Sunshine” Law; conflicts of interest and incompatible offices; the Hancock Amendment; local revenue sources; and an update on legislation passed during the 2010 General Assembly.

“The workshop is designed to inform elected officials and key local government employees of the mandated duties and responsibilities of their various positions,” explained Richard Cavender, MRPC executive director. “It will also help elected officials and employees improve efficiency and better understand issues that affect local governments, and give them a chance to ask questions that they might have.”

Cavender pointed out that while the workshop is geared for city officials, other elected officials—such as county officials, school board members, water and sewer district boards and fire and ambulance district representatives—could benefit from workshop information as well and are encouraged to participate.

Persons interested in more information can contact Lisa Warnke at MRPC at (573) 265-2993 or email lwarnke@meramecregion.org. Preregistration is requested so that ample food and materials will be available.
