Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee to provide more hazardous material trainings to emergency responders

ST. JAMES— Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee (MREPC) is focusing on providing hazardous materials trainings to the emergency responders in the region. MREPC agreed to allocate more funds to increase the number of trainings provided in the region at its meeting Nov. 8 at Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC).

The classes MREPC is looking to provide to local responders are chemical suicide, hazmat awareness and hazmat operations. Hazardous Material Rail Car Incident trainings are being coordinated in Rolla and Washington County for January 2018.

MREPC also submitted the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant for each of the seven counties covered under the committee – Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps and Washington. An application was submitted for each county with each application requesting three trainings that, if approved, would be provided by the Missouri Emergency Response Commission (MERC).

For those interested in upcoming trainings or upcoming MREPC meetings, contact Tammy Snodgrass at 573-265-2993, via email at tsnodgrass@meramecregion.org or check MRPC’s website www.meramecregion.org for additional information.

MREPC works with local governments as well as the private sector to maintain plans responsive to chemical hazards, which seriously threaten the area. The committee periodically coordinates and offers training opportunities for emergency responders in the region. Quarterly meetings are open to the public and are held at MRPC’s office in St. James. MRPC provides staff support for the local emergency planning committee.

Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 22, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities.
